Trauma Therapy
“Trauma is not what happens to you. It is what happens inside of you.
It is not the blow to your head. It’s the concussion that you get.”
- Dr. Gabor Mate
Trauma is an event that you experienced in your past, or are currently experiencing, that has impacted the way you perceive the world, yourself, and the people around you.
Trauma symptoms can arise from experiencing or witnessing events such as physical abuse,
sexual abuse,
emotional abuse,
life threatening illness,
loss of a family member in a violent death,
and/or life-threatening accident [road accident or natural disaster].
There is no one way that trauma manifests in a person’s life. The trauma symptoms vary from person to person and could range in severity. Some of the common trauma symptoms look like,
experiencing intrusive thoughts and memories of the trauma event,
intense emotional dysregulation,
avoiding thinking or talking about the trauma event,
blaming yourself for what happened,
detaching yourself from the people around because of the lack of trust,
feeling the need to look over your shoulder
and/or excessively scan environment for threats, “hypervigilance”.
